Field Equipment for Students in the Sierra Field Course
General Notes: Because mountain weather is highly variable, we
need to be prepared for all sorts of weather, from warm, sunny days to rainstorms to (yes!)
snowstorms. The best solution is to bring many layers, for easy adjustment during the day. At the
same time, we will need to travel light, so all our gear can fit in three minivans. Soft luggage is strongly recommended. Good luck!
Field Clothing:
- Sturdy hiking boots (preferably waterproof)
- Cold weather gear: (hat, gloves, base layer, thick socks, sweater, vest, fleece!)
- Warm weather gear (shorts, t-shirts, sunglasses)
- Good raincoat/windbreaker
- Comfortable footwear (running shoes, tevas, etc.)
- Sun hat with visor
- Swimsuit
Other Field Equipment:
- Sleeping Bag (warm enough for chilly evenings in the mountain air)
- Small pillow
- Daypack (large enough for field clothing, notebooks, etc.)
- Sunglasses
- Sun protection (block/screen)
- Bug repellent
- Lip balm
- Toiletries
- Towel
- Personal first aid kit
- Medications
- Water bottle
- Field notebook
- Pens, pencils
- Flashlight
Optional Equipment that you may find useful:
- Rain pants
- Binoculars
- Bandanna
- Penknife (Don't bring it on the plane!)
- Compass
- Camera, film, batteries
- Spare prescription sunglasses, contacts
- Long-distance phone card
- Cash or credit card for incidental expenses
- Some good reading material
Notes. If you do not already have appropriate field gear, check
around to see what you can borrow. If necessary, we can help organize a trip to a local outdoor
store to help with field preparation. If acquiring field gear presents a significant financial hurdle
for you, let us know, and we can seek sources of support
